The Tsitsikamma Trail is a southern Cape hiking paradise, journeying through extensive indigenous afromontane forest and mountain fynbos. This slightly shorter variation of the full 6 Day hike lets us enjoy just enough of the enchanted mountain landscape.
This hike sets off from the Lottering Plantation office in the heart of the Tsitsikamma. This 11,5km access route winds its way between the Elandskop and Grenadier’s Cap peaks finally reaching the Wetter Keurbos forest where the first night’s hut is settled.
Day 2 passes through very diverse habitat types and has a number of exciting river crossings. After an approximate 1,5km gradual descent from Keurbos hut through very tall fynbos the Lottering River is reached. Hikers should proceed slowly up Rushes Pass, pausing regularly to appreciate the majestic views. Once over the saddle, large pockets of untouched indigenous forest become visible in remote mountain regions. The path then descends for a similar distance to follow the western bank of the Elandsbos River for almost a kilometre before reaching the Elandsbos River crossing point. Heuningbos indigenous forest has many hidden secrets awaiting hikers further ahead. After the final descent towards the hut, you will cross the Kleinbos River twice before reaching the Heuningbos Hut. A very pleasant swimming pool lies within rolling distance away.
The hike exits south towards the Boskor Sawmill 5 km away ready to be collected by a shuttle.

A marvellous mountain hike! We hiked in winter in July on clear sunny cold days, the perfect temperature for hiking. The hike from Lottering Forest Station to keurbos was all jeep track but in no way was it boring, tall pine forests, mountain streams and magnificent mountains on view the whole way to keurbos. Keurbos to Heuningbos hike was spectacular, especially the view of Rushes Pass. River crossings were all manageable, with some calf deep water. The overnight facilities are top class! The new A frame huts are so cozy and comfortable. The lapa areas even had 2 plate gas. Lots of firewood available. The firewood donkey boilers for hot showers was a real treat. We were really impressed with the upgraded lapas, huts and cabins. We cannot wait to hike again.
