Our route to Verlorenvlei takes us through beautiful farmlands with usually many Dry Land and Fynbos bird species. A variety of raptors are usually encountered and occasional Goliath Herons have been spotted along this route on a number of occasions. En route we pass through the little farming village Aurora at the foot of the Fynbos covered hills and an interesting mix of farming activities of tea plantations, contrasting potato fields and lucern and then on to Redelinghuys with its interesting wall murals.
The Verlorenvlei (Lost valley) riverine system offers an often surprising mix of dry land, coastal, riverine and wader bird species. A variety of kingfishers, from the Giant to the Malachite are often encountered. The best season for visiting this region arguably is between May and November with higher water levels in the system due to the rains.
