Velddrift is known for its typical West Coast fishing culture. The village, only some 40 minutes drive from Paternoster, nestles along the mouth of the Berg River region which offers perfect marshland and riverine vistas. Many – and even rare – waders are regularly seen here. You are sure to see many flamingos, with pelicans, a variety of indigenous ducks, weavers mixed with many dry region species.
A very good option is to also do a boat ride which usually allows close approaches to many of the shy birds.
Also of interest is the presence of thousands of Cape cormorant that depart from their roosts for the ocean at first light in the morning, returning at dusk. It had been estimated that at times up to a million birds are seen flocking in and out of the river mouth
