Day 1 - Scenic drive to the Cape Overberg Cape Agulhas We set off from Cape Town and take the N2 to the Cape Overberg region, travelling via the historic ‘almost 200-year old’ Sir Lowry’s Pass. The view of False Bay from the top is magnificent and the fertile valleys on the other side are the gate way to the beautiful Boland. First stop is at a popular farm stall that sells delicious pastries and coffee for breakfast. Boland farmlands The journey continues through the small farming town of Caledon and onto Bredasdorp, where we stop to visit the Shipwreck Museum. It’s houses a fascinating collection of shipwreck artefacts collected off the treacherous coastline and a visual display of the shipping history of the Cape. Cape Agulhas lighthouse We arrive in Cape Agulhas late morning and our first stop is the famous Cape Agulhas lighthouse. The striking red-and-white lighthouse marks the southernmost tip of Africa and where the official point where the icy Atlantic Ocean meets the warm Indian Ocean. Most people think Cape Point claims this honour. Built in 1848, the Cape Agulhas lighthouse is the second-oldest working lighthouse in South Africa. It has a light power of 7.5 million candles and reaches 30 nautical miles out to sea. Visitors can climb the 71 narrow steps to the top of the lighthouse for a panoramic view of the meeting point of the two oceans. Return via Hermanus and Betty’s Bay After spending town in the quaint town of Cape Agulhas and learning more about its rich maritime history, we return to Cape Town taking the scenic coastal route and travelling via Hermanus and Betty’s Bay. In Hermanus, we stop for a bite to eat and refreshments and a walk around the busy town market. If time permits, we visit a massive colony of endangered African penguins at Stony Point.
