Walking & Running Trail in Johannesburg by Pont de Val
Walking & Running Trail in Johannesburg by Pont de Val
Enjoy the beautiful 5 km PDV Trail at Pont de Val Estate, open to all walkers, joggers, and runners every Saturday and Sunday from 07:00 to 11:00. The trail begins and ends near the main riverside lawn, following a single loop through some of the estate’s most scenic areas. The first part of the route runs along the peaceful Vaal River, with clear views of the historic Barrage Dam Wall. From there, the path curves inland through Pont de Val’s tranquil vineyards and countryside, before returning to the riverfront for a strong finish. The surface is a mix of dirt paths, short paved sections, and grass. It’s mostly flat, with a few gentle slopes—perfect for all fitness levels. Toilets, cafés, and parking are available on-site. After your walk or run, feel free to enjoy a cappuccino or smoothie at the Depresso Cafe, or breakfast at the Frederic's Table Restaurant.

I love the walk! Very varying landscape and beautiful views! Thanks so much for opening this walk! Will do it often. And of course, a coffee at Depresso afterwards is the cherry on top :-)

It wasn't the most enjoyable parkrun I've done. The route felt like it went through some of the less scenic parts of Pont de Val, and the layout almost seemed reversed. The starting point in particular feels poorly placed. At the moment, it's set up at what looks like a dead end, which is not very motivating when beginning a run. If it were moved just 10 metres, it would sit alongside the road that comes out of the wooded area, and the course could be run in reverse in a way that makes far more sense. Starting with a short 2-metre stretch and then turning immediately into the bushes doesn't feel like an encouraging way to launch a race. In my view, it would make more sense to start where the finish line currently is, heading first toward the wooded area, looping around, and then finishing near the picnic park---the most beautiful part of the venue. At the moment, running past the picnic park right at the start feels like a missed opportunity. I also didn't enjoy passing what looked like a rubbish heap near the Water Lodge gate. Overall, I feel the route could be redesigned to highlight the best features of the location. Of course, this is just my personal opinion.
